battery standard for engine starting tests

battery standard for engine starting testsThis procedure applies to wet charge” batteries only and ensures that batteries used for cold
room starting tests are properly prepared to preclude test results being influenced by varying
battery condition. The term wet charge” applies equally to standard, low maintenance and
maintenance-free types.
1.1 COMMONALITY. This is a CONTROL TEST and can be used to qualify vehicles or
components throughout the world. The test may be conducted at any location having the
necessary equipment and facilities. Proposed revisions to this procedure must be submitted per
FAP 03-179.
2.0 INSTRUMENTATION
2.1 Hydrometer.
2.2 Thermometer.
2.2 All test measurement equipment must be calibrated and maintained per FAP 03-015, Control,
Calibration, and Maintenance of Measurement and Test Equipment.
2.3 All applicable safety guidelines and procedures must be followed.
3.0 EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES
3.1 Battery charging bench with adequate fume extraction facilities.
3.2 Battery charger incorporating digital volt meter and ammeter.
4.0 SAMPLE PREPARATION
4.1 Ensure that batteries are to the latest release level, at least two weeks old but no older than 120
days since manufacture. Record battery type, rating and date code.
4.2 Ensure that electrolyte level of each battery cell is approximately 6 mm (0.25 in) above the top
of separator or to level line. (Not applicable to maintenance free batteries.)
5.0 OPERATION
5.1 Charge batteries by one of the methods listed below. During the charging period, maintain
electrolyte temperature between 15-50°C (60 - 120°F). (NOTE: A battery is fully charged
when its on charge” terminal voltage, charging current or specific gravity remains constant
within 0.01 volts, 0.05 amp or 0.002 units respectively, for three consecutive readings taken at
one hour intervals.)
5.1.1 Charge standard or low maintenance batteries either at twice the rated conditioning current (2 to
10 amp) or at a constant 14.0 ± 0.1 volts until fully charged. (See NOTE in Step 5.1 above.)
