Continuously Variable Transmissions In The Automotive And Other Industries
Revised Abstract - The future of transmission technology
lies in continuously variable planetary drives. Current
transmissions consist of planetary gear sets which use a
fixed number of gear ratios to convert an input drive speed
into a different output drive speed. [2] Automobiles typically
have between four and six forward speeds and one reverse
speed. Having only a limited number of speed ratios can be
a problem. The operator of an automobile or any other
machine with an engine and transmission sometimes must
choose between a ratio that is too high and bogs down the
engine, or a ratio that is too low and over revs the engine.
Either choice results in decreased performance and may
cause damage to the engine. In addition, this may cause
excess exhaust output and fuel consumption, which is
harmful to the environment. [1] Continuously variable
transmissions (CVT) operate in a much different way than
contemporary transmissions. They change seamlessly
through an infinite number of effective gear ratios between
full under drive and full over drive. One continuously
variable transmission our paper will explore is the NuVinci
CVT designed by Fallbrook Technologies. [3] The NuVinci
transmission uses a set of rotating and tilting balls
positioned between the input and output components of the
transmission that tilt to vary the speed of the transmission.
[1] Throughout our paper we will present the pros and cons
of integrating continuously variable transmissions into
current technologies. These technologies will most likely
include automobiles, aircraft, bicycles, light electric
vehicles, low speed vehicles (lawn tractors and golf carts),
agricultural equipment, and wind energy. Our paper will
also explore the technology behind different types of
continuously variable transmissions and how this effects
their operation, cost, and maintenance. Exploring these
transmissions will be beneficial because they have the
potential to improve our environment, economy, and our
overall well-being by improving the efficiency of engines
and other machines that require transmissions.
